2012 SkS Weekly Digest #44

Posted on 5 November 2012 by John Hartz

Special Message

The thoughts of the SkS Author team go out to all those impacted by the climatic event now known as Superstorm Sandy.

SkS Highlights

Dana's Hurricane Sandy and the Climate Connection systematically explains how man-made climate change amplified Hurricane Sandy's impacts on the eastern US and Canada and why it became Superstorm Sandy. A prequel to Dana's article is Doug Bostrom's Hurricane Sandy: Neither weather nor tide nor sea level can be legislated.

Given New York City's position as the media captial of the US, it is not surprising that the US and international media have devoted considerable attention to Superstorm Sandy by addressing its causes and its effects in numerous articles, opinion pieces, and broadcasts. A sample of this coverage is provided in the first two SkS news bulletins to ever be posted.

What say you?

Does the new format of the Weekly News Digest better serve your needs than the previous format?

Quote of the Week

“Climate change is only happening in one direction,” said Kevin Trenberth, a senior scientist at the National Center for Atmospheric Research. “The temperature is warmer, the sea level is higher and the air is warmer so it can hold more moisture.”

Flood risk will rise with climate change, experts say by Juliet Eilperin, Washington Post, Nov 1, 1012

SkS in the News

Media Matters referenced Dana's Matt Ridley - Wired for Lukewarm Catastrophe, used the SkS carbon cycle graphic and The Escalator, and referenced John Cook's article on confirmation bias.

Doug Bostrom's Hurricane Sandy: Neither weather nor tide nor sea level can be legislated was re-posted by Environment Guru.

Gavin Schmidt at RealClimate referenced The Escalator and its use in the PBS Frontline program Climate of Doubt.

Graham Redfern at DeSmogBlog referenced Skeptical Science's Monckton Myths in his post detailing Christopher Monckton's silly IPCC braggery

SkS Spotlights

The African Youth Initiative on Climate Change (AYICC) was formed partially in response to the poor representation of young Africans at the International Youth Summit on Climate Change which was held in conjunction with the United Nation’s Climate Change Conference (Nov/Dec, 2005) in Montreal, Canada. The overall mission of AYICC is to ensure that African youth are equipped to participate in future UNFCCC (United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change) meetings and other global initiatives for sustainable solutions to environmental degradation and climate change.

Comments 1 to 3:

  1. Wow, I hadn't seen that Bloomberg cover before now (just got electricity back). Powerful statement from one of the 'oracles' of the usual denier crowd.

  2. The urgency implied by the cover will quickly fade. Most TV media have moved on. Global warming is a very distant issue for most voters and sea level rise is still being used by Republicans as a laugh line with their constituents. Those still trying to recover from Sandy will have a nor’easter to deal with Wednesday and Thursday and we all know that no one can do anything about it. Just have to take another hit. We have to live with the sea level we have and just have to accept the sea level rise built into the warming we have created.

  3. I've just run across this... http://scienceandpublicpolicy.org/images/stories/papers/originals/letter_paxman.pdf ...which may be worth sticking on the to-be-debunked list.
