SkS public talks in Canada and AGU, San Francisco

Posted on 26 November 2011 by John Cook

Over the next fortnight, I'll be roaming the west coast of North America, giving talks in British Columbia and at the San Francisco AGU Fall Meeting in California (that's right, I only visit regions that put a price on carbon). Here are the details of the public presentations I'll be giving:

Canada

Wednesday 30 November, University of Victoria

Thanks to the Pacific Institute for Climate Solutions, I'll be giving a free public talk at the University of Victoria, discussing the psychology of misinformation, the most effective ways to debunk myths and ways to use social media to communicate science. There'll be opportunity for questions afterwards (depending on how long my talk goes - at the slightest encouragement from the audience when I start talking social media and the Internet, I may get on a roll).

Title: Debunking myths in the age of new media

When: 3:30 pm– 4:30pm, Wednesday, November 30

Where: B150 Bob Wright Bldg, UVic

LiveWebcast: http://www.pics.uvic.ca/broadcast.php

For more information please call 250 853 3626

USA (AGU Fall Meeting)

Sunday 4 December - Using Social Media

This will feature 2 workshops on Sunday afternoon - at 1pm and 3:10pm. The workshops are free but only 25 spaces available for each workshop. I'll be talking about using social media to communicate science along with Callan Bentley, Professor of Geology, Northern Virginia Community College, & author of the Mountain Beltway blog. According to the AGU page, sign up is now closed (will update this post if that changes).

Title: Using Social Media

When: 1pm to 2:50pm or 3:10pm to 5pm, Sunday, December 4

Where: San Francisco Marriott Marquis, Salons 1-6

Who: Callan Bentley, John Cook

Monday 5 December - Effectively Communicating Climate Science

This is going to be an information rich 2 hour session featuring some climate communication heavyweights. Each speaker will talk for 20 minutes then there'll be questions - I'm anticipating this should be a cracker of a session!

Title: Effectively Communicating Climate Science

When: 1:40pm to 3:40pm, Monday, December 5

Where: Room 103 (Moscone South)

Who: Susan Joy Hassol (Telling the Climate Change Story)
Ed Maibach (Improving the effectiveness of communication about climate science: Insights from the “Global Warming’s Six Americas” audience segmentation research project)
John Reisman (Context and Relevance in Climate Communications)
John Cook (Effectively Rebutting Climate Misinformation)

Wednesday 7 December - Climate Science: Reaching Audiences via TV, the Web, and more!

This panel will be discussing the multitude of mediums we can use to communicate climate science to audiences. If features one of my personal heroes, Richard Alley and also Dan Satterfield, chief meteorologist for WHNT-TV and occasional guest blogger for SkS. Should be a great panel. Did I mention Richard Alley was one of the panelists?

Title: Climate Science: Reaching Audiences via TV, the Web, and more!

When: 8am to 10am, Wednesday, December 7

Where: Moscone South, Room 300

Who: Richard Alley, host of EARTH: The Operators’ Manual series on PBS
Tony Strawa, a Catholic climate ambassador for the Catholic Coalition on Climate Change
Dan Satterfield, author of Dan’s Wild Wild Science Journal blog and chief meteorologist for WHNT-TV.

  3. That's great, John. Let's hope you all get plenty of positive publicity. (If not, I guess you will know how to correct it - grin.)

  4. Hi John, It's interesting that you will be joining Callan Bentley from NOVA. I taught a geology course at the Annandale campus there in 1980 or '81. I don't know Callan personally but have been following his blog. I'm especially interested in his geology photos. Best of luck on your talks and seminars. My wife and I had a great trip to Vancouver Island and Victoria a few years ago. Be sure and see the butterflies. Tom

  5. So close, yet so far -- I hope to see an East-Coast trip at some point :-D

  6. For those who aren't attending these events, useful would be SkS summary writeups for these and other climate science presentations. The webcasts help, but there don't seem to be many of these. These events go largely ignored among the media (some silly Heartland Institute "conference" gets more coverage despite being orders of magnitude smaller and less credible) so there's a great opportunity to communicate climate science findings to the public.

  7. It's unlikely I'll be able to attend the AGU conference this year, but I'd like to at least meet John and other SkSers for a beer in San Fran. I suggest The Monk's Kettle, but I'm open to other suggestions.
