Skeptical Science New Research for Week #43 2023

Open access notables

It's always a special pleasure to note an article including Skeptical Science's founder John Cook in the author roster. Misinformation and the epistemic integrity of democracy includes not only Cook as a collaborator but also a cast of other familiar authorities on human cognition in connection with climate science, in particular how our mental equipment struggles with following a continuous thread of truth through a tangled knot of disconnected confusion in the form of misinformation.

We're not necessarily very good thinkers in the best of circumstances. We often fail to think clearly when we're in the presence of misinformation or synthetic ignorance, especially when it's calculated and crafted exactly for the purpose of paralyzing competent treatment. In their abstract the authors note "Democracy relies on a shared body of knowledge among citizens, for example trust in elections and reliable knowledge to inform policy-relevant debate." One can extend that thought (and the article implicltly does); not only democracy is at stake, but arguably all of what we currently consider to be "civilization." If we hear and believe that a virus is less likely to be causing a global pandemic than 5G cellular phone equipment and we've been fostered to be in large company, our public health systems begin to break down. Similarly, if our heads are stuffed with confusing rubbish about how Earth's climate functions, our societal cohesion and hence collective ability to govern side-effects of industry such as CO2 emissions and climate change malfunctions— as we're now acutely aware.

We can be thankful that not only this team but also a small army of other researchers are figuring out how to thicken our mental armor against bunk. In this work Lewandowsky et al. identify how misinformation has evolved to more efficiently attack and degrade public confidence in science, and specific tested methods of amelioriating this harm.

As complete a quantification of the physical impacts and external costs imposed by state-of-the-art ungoverned mechanized avarice as anybody could desire:  The Environmental Footprint of Bitcoin Mining Across the Globe: Call for Urgent Action. Published in AGU Earth's Future by Chamanara, Ghaffarizadeh & Madani, this report has already made a splash in the press. But no newspaper will run enough column inches to fully capture the catastrophically entropic energy travesty inflicted on us all by bitcoin mining. Happily, the article is open access, so all the details are available. 

If it were an engineer's report to a condo association describing a buildiing with failing environmental systems caused by poor habits of occupants, the condo board of directors would be feverishly revising bylaws, posting notes to offenders and urgently planning and then actioning repairs. However, The 2023 state of the climate report: Entering uncharted territory reports that nobody's answering the phone with listening ears fully open when it comes to climate change. Ripple et al. recite a growing damage list, an inventory of Earth systems degrading due to our fossil-fueled climate intervention and upset. Noting obligations and demands for forthright communications from scientists, the authors oblige, joining a burgeoning chorus ignited by eye-popping statistics from the year we're still in:

As scientists, we are increasingly being asked to tell the public the truth about the crises we face in simple and direct terms. The truth is that we are shocked by the ferocity of the extreme weather events in 2023. We are afraid of the uncharted territory that we have now entered. Conditions are going to get very distressing and potentially unmanageable for large regions of the world, with the 2.6°C warming expected over the course of the century, even if the self-proposed national emissions reduction commitments of the Paris Agreement are met. 

As if running a country not richly endowed with economic underpinnings that is also facing population pressures both internal as well superimposed thanks to generosity— while trying to tiptoe through simmering conflict on all sides without also being set aflame--  is not already hard enough, we can still pile on more pressure. Integrating Climate Security into Policy Frameworks: Jordan identifies emerging climate-driven problems in Jordan, contextualizing them to Jordan's unique set of challenges. This ends up sounding fairly hair-raising to anybody able to form a comparative mental picture and who happens to be in more fortunate circumstances. It's a testament to hope if nothing else that the report goes on to construct a comprehensive launching point for short, medium and long term policy objectives to ameliorate the weight of climate change added to an already straining governance framework. Closing on a positive note: The ongoing lateral expansion of peatlands in Finland by Juselius-RajamäkiVäliranta & Korhola in Global Change Biology. The authors report a surprising and pleasing finding, namely that contrary to conventional wisdom there are places on Earth where peatlands are expanding. At least, it's true in parts of Finland, where all five sampled areas showed increasing areal coverage. It's not a "get out of jail free" card by any means, but a brief glance at any weekly listing's "GHG sources & sinks, flux.." section reveals how the needle of organic carbon movement is generally pointed in the wrong direction. Anything grabbing carbon and sinking it is a gift at this point, making our mitigation efforts just a little bit easier.

Housekeeping

This edition of New Research includes some "back catalog" thanks our clearing a clog in the pipeline emptying as our weekly listing. Preprints as a publicly-accessible feature in the academic publishing landscape underwent an acceleration after many technical conventions for bibliiographic indexes and publication metadata tracking were established. Methods and procedures for handling preprints were added as pressure on the systems increased. It eventuates that accounting for the lifecycle of a paper as it may first appear in preprint and then (hopefully) progress to "pupate" to emerge as a published article adds complexity, with opportunities for errors and omissions. For New Research this has manifested as some peculiar glitches in how certain publishers handle the evolution of a paper, compared to how the majority operate, leading a fair number of items "stuck" in preprint status and hence unlisted here. This problem is substantially fixed with additional local logic, and this issue contains the entire (?) backlog of previously arrested reports.

Accelerating Decarbonization in the United States: Technology, Policy, and Societal Dimensions (2023)*, Pacala et al., National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine

Through an assessment of current federal, state, and local climate and energy policies, the authors identify gaps and barriers to implementation that would prevent the nation from attaining its climate, economic, and societal goals. The authors organize their assessment around five major objectives of decarbonization policy—GHG emission reductions, equity and fairness, health, employment, and public engagement that cut across eight sectors: electricity, buildings, land use, transportation, industry, finance, fossil fuels, and nonfederal actors.

Climate Action at Work, Tides Center

Reducing carbon emissions by 50% by 2030 to achieve net-zero emissions by 2050 will require sweeping changes at all levels of government – federal, state, and local. The corporate sector could help accelerate the passage of ambitious climate policy, but too many companies are narrowly focused on reducing emissions in their own operations or investing in innovation for the long term. These are vital - but bold policies are needed to scale solutions much more quickly. The challenge is that ambitious public policy is needed to solve the climate crisis at scale. Employees can exert an outsized impact when they raise their voices about the climate at work. However, employees do not often realize that this lever is available to them, and when they do, it can be daunting to act without a playbook and without fellow colleagues to work with. The authors present such a playbook.

Beyond Divestment, David Whyte, Corporate Watch and Centre for Climate Crime and Climate Justice

The top 20 shareholders in both BP and Shell have increased their total number of shares by three-quarters of a billion in BP, and half a billion in Shell since the Paris Agreement was signed in 2015. Although 47% of BP shareholders and 54% of Shell shareholders have reduced their stake in Shell and BP, net share ownership has risen by 10% in both BP and Shell. Any trend towards divestment amongst the 47% and 54% of BP and Shell shareholders is being canceled out by the largest shareholders, who happen to include the world’s largest and most powerful asset managers. Moreover, what might look like divestment cannot always be read as such; more than a quarter of the 20 investors who made the most significant reductions in shareholdings in either BP or Shell actually increased their shares in the other company. Only 60 institutional investors have sold all their shares in the two oil firms. This represents 3% of BP and 4% of Shell shareholders. The enormous increase in both market capitalization and share price for the two oil giants since the Paris Agreement reaffirms the conclusion that divestment campaigns are not having the necessary impact. If shareholder divestment is not working fast enough – as this report shows – then we need to pursue other forms of intervention that drastically scale back oil and gas production.

Integrating Climate Security into Policy Frameworks: Jordan, Spencer McMurray, adelphi and CGIAR

The climate crisis is increasing security risks in Jordan. Of the manifold risks Jordan must contend with, the most pressing are those with direct implications for water resources which are already under significant strain due to both climatic and human-induced factors. Higher temperatures are leading to more evapotranspiration and reduced rainfall is especially critical, straining the groundwater and aquifer reserves that are already over-exploited. Extreme weather events and their impacts, including droughts, flash floods, and landslides, further complicate matters. These risks translate into important implications for Jordanians across a variety of areas, including political, social, demographic, and economic realms, especially when combined with pre-existing grievances and especially poverty. Together, these create significant challenges for food, water, and livelihood security, affecting the overall health and well-being of Jordanians.

Obtaining articles without journal subscriptions

We know it's frustrating that many articles we cite here are not free to read. One-off paid access fees are generally astronomically priced, suitable for such as "On a Heuristic Point of View Concerning the Production and Transformation of Light but not as a gamble on unknowns. With a median world income of US$ 9,373, for most of us US$ 42 is significant money to wager on an article's relevance and importance. 

How is New Research assembled?

Most articles appearing here are found via  RSS feeds from journal publishers, filtered by search terms to produce raw output for assessment of relevance. 

Relevant articles are then queried against the Unpaywall database, to identify open access articles and expose useful metadata for articles appearing in the database. 

The objective of New Research isn't to cast a tinge on scientific results, to color readers' impressions. Hence candidate articles are assessed via two metrics only:

A few journals offer public access to "preprint" versions of articles for which the review process is not yet complete. For some key journals this all the mention we'll see in RSS feeds, so we include such items in New Research. These are flagged as "preprint."

The section "Informed opinion, nudges & major initiatives" includes some items that are not scientific research per se but fall instead into the category of "perspectives," observations of implications of research findings, areas needing attention, etc.
